The Hardest Questions for Life || How Does it Feel to Be a Problem?

Sunday, August 16, 2020

Rev. Dr. Donna Claycomb Sokol || Pastor

Matthew 15:21-28

The questions forming our current series come from an organization called, “Fearless Dialogues.” Emory Professor, Greg Ellison, birthed the organization in July 2013 after George Zimmerman was found not guilty of second-degree murder in the lethal shooting of Trayvon Martin. Ellison witnessed the tensions that resulted from the trial and the emerging or clarified need for “transformative dialogue that embraces difference, cultivates hope, and leads to change.” A fearless dialogue takes place in Sunday's text when Jesus is approached by a Canaanite woman pleading for mercy. Jesus initially ignores her. But the woman continues to shout for mercy. After a less than pleasant exchange in a rather difficult reading, her daughter is eventually healed. Listen in and watch this worship service from August 16, 200 as we seek to learn from Jesus' initial response to one who is seen as a problem and the woman's extraordinary persistence that leads to transformation.
