Palm Sunday Worship

Palm Sunday Worship

  • Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Holy Week begins this Sunday as we remember Jesus arriving in the city of Jerusalem, the place where he has told his disciples he will be mocked, flogged, and crucified. While "the crowds" cheered him on, "the entire city" was in turmoil as people inquired about the person who came riding in on the back of a donkey and a colt. The entrance is what Stanley Hauerwas calls "an unmistakable political act." The entrance symbolizes the clash of two very different kinds of power. One is marked by humility, non-violence, and compassion for all. The other is marked by dominance, weapons, and wealth for a select few. What side would you have chosen if you were in Jerusalem that day? What side have you chosen today? While it might be easy to shout "Hosanna" at the start of the week, are we willing to pay the price that comes with following Jesus all the way to the cross?

Worship will include the distribution of palms and our children participating in a Palm Parade during the opening hymn.

Starting on Monday, February 23, you are invited to join the Monday Night Book Study for an online, 6-week study exploring Fear of the Other: No Fear in Love by Bishop Will Willimon. Rooted in the promise of 1 John that “perfect love casts out fear,” this study examines how fear distorts our common life and how the gospel calls us to respond with courageous, Christ-shaped love. Drawing on Scripture and Wesleyan theology, participants will wrestle with Jesus’ command to love our enemies, pray for those who oppose us, and see our adversaries as persons created and loved by God. In a polarized world, this study invites us to confront fear not with withdrawal or hostility, but with the risky, transforming love of Christ. Please contact Minister Lee for more information or the Zoom link.

Prayer is one of the foundations of our faith. But prayer can be a confusing, mystifying process to sort out alone. During the season of Lent, many people will make praying more often or better one of their Lenten disciplines—only to struggle to keep with it as daily pressures and time crunches set in. Many of us struggle with prayer for all types of reasons, but we don't have to struggle alone.

Starting on Sunday, February 22 and continuing through Palm Sunday on March 29, the a small group will gather to discuss why we pray and explore different types of prayer to help grow in faith. As we prepare to enter this sacred season, please reach out to Minister Lee if you are interested in joining the group.

New Monday Night Study- One Faithful Promise: The Wesleyan Covenant for Renewal

“I am no longer my own, but thine.

Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt.

Put me to doing, put me to suffering.

Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee,

exalted for thee or brought low for thee.

Let me be full, let me be empty.

Let me have all things, let me have nothing.

I freely and heartily yield all things

to thy pleasure and disposal.

And now, O glorious and blessed God,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it.

And the covenant which I have made on earth,

let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.”

Every year, starting in 1755, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, would lead a Covenant Renewal Service. Typically on New Year’s Eve, Methodists would gather and recommit themselves to deepening their relationship with God through this service which centered on the above covenant prayer. You’re invited to join the Monday Night Bible Study this winter as they journey with Magrey deVega’s study, One Faithful Promise: The Wesleyan Covenant for Renewalstarting on January 5 and concluding on February 9. On Sunday, December 28, our 11:00am worship will look a little different than usual. Instead of gathering in the sanctuary, we’ll gather around tables in the fellowship hall for an interactive, in-person-only service (no livestream this week). You are invited to bring muffins, donuts, a casserole, or fruit to share, as breakfast will be shared midway through worship. Together we will reflect on Matthew’s telling of the Christmas story—the joy of Christ’s coming held alongside the hard truths of a broken world—and engage in honest, justice-oriented conversation as we eat. This service will invite us to linger in Christmas joy while also asking how fear can become fuel for justice as we look toward the year ahead. Come hungry—for food, for fellowship, and for God’s presence and power. Please contact Pastor Donna if you are willing to bring a dish to share.
