You can help to make a difference in our city by feeding hungry people by bringing ingredients for the sandwiches and/or making them together in community. All Young Adults (20s and 30s) are invited to join Pastor Donna and other young adults from the MVP community for brunch and a time of connection on the second Sunday of each month. The group departs from the church together following worship to walk to a nearby restaurant to share a meal and time in community. MVP Youth (grades 6 through 12) are invited to gather with youth from other United Methodist churches in DC on Sunday, March 1 from 4:30-6:00pm for a time of fellowship, food, games, and faith formation. This time will continue to build on the content from the March IGNITE youth conference and will be hosted at MVP. Contact the Minister Lee for more information.

This time will also include a parent meeting with additional details for the IGNITE Youth Conference later in March .

MVP's Shower Ministry is open on Sunday Mornings from 8:00-10:00am. Volunteers arrive at 7:30am to set-up the area, greet and welcome guests, engage in conversation, help distribute supplies, and ensure a welcoming and clean space for all who participate. Those who are serving then stay through 10:55am to clean and tidy the space. Please contact the Shower Ministry Co-Coordinators to sign up to serve or to receive more information on this vital ministry.

You are invited to join the UMC congregations in our hub as we journey through the Vital Conversations on Immigration series, a tool designed to help explore our calling to embody justice, mercy, and hospitality. The series will take place via Zoom on Thursday evenings starting February 26 and concluding on March 26.

With a study guide and accompanying video, each session will invite you into deeper reflection on the realities of immigration today, guided by the voices of faith leaders, theologians, advocates, and immigrants themselves.

Starting on Monday, February 23, you are invited to join the Monday Night Book Study for an online, 6-week study exploring Fear of the Other: No Fear in Love by Bishop Will Willimon. Rooted in the promise of 1 John that “perfect love casts out fear,” this study examines how fear distorts our common life and how the gospel calls us to respond with courageous, Christ-shaped love. Drawing on Scripture and Wesleyan theology, participants will wrestle with Jesus’ command to love our enemies, pray for those who oppose us, and see our adversaries as persons created and loved by God. In a polarized world, this study invites us to confront fear not with withdrawal or hostility, but with the risky, transforming love of Christ. If you are a Young Adult in your 20s or 30s, you are invited to join this small group experience designed for young adults seeking inclusive and authentic community. Each week this group takes time to decompress before the work week, explore scripture, and pray together. Please reach out to Minister Lee if you are interested in joining the group. 

Prayer is one of the foundations of our faith. But prayer can be a confusing, mystifying process to sort out alone. During the season of Lent, many people will make praying more often or better one of their Lenten disciplines—only to struggle to keep with it as daily pressures and time crunches set in. Many of us struggle with prayer for all types of reasons, but we don't have to struggle alone.

Starting on Sunday, February 22 and continuing through Palm Sunday on March 29, the a small group will gather to discuss why we pray and explore different types of prayer to help grow in faith. As we prepare to enter this sacred season, please reach out to Minister Lee if you are interested in joining the group.

Then join us for MVP's Annual Chili Cook Off following worship on February 8 in the Fellowship Hall. Sample as many chilis as you want and vote for your favorite. If so, you are invited to participate in the next gathering of Beyond the Book on Thursday, January 22 from 6:30 to 7:30pm at Teaism in Penn Quarter (400 8th Street NW). The January conversation will be focused on Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan, a quiet yet powerful novella set in a small Irish town that follows a coal merchant confronting an uncomfortable truth—and the moral weight of choosing whether to look away or act. Every year, starting in 1755, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, would lead a Covenant Renewal Service. Typically on New Year’s Eve, Methodists would gather and recommit themselves to deepening their relationship with God through this service which centered on the above covenant prayer. You’re invited to join the Monday Night Bible Study this winter as they journey with Magrey deVega’s study, One Faithful Promise: The Wesleyan Covenant for Renewal, starting on January 5 and concluding on February 9. On Sunday, December 28, our 11:00am worship will look a little different than usual. Instead of gathering in the sanctuary, we’ll gather around tables in the fellowship hall for an interactive, in-person-only service (no livestream this week). You are invited to bring muffins, donuts, a casserole, or fruit to share, as breakfast will be shared midway through worship. Together we will reflect on Matthew’s telling of the Christmas story—the joy of Christ’s coming held alongside the hard truths of a broken world—and engage in honest, justice-oriented conversation as we eat. This service will invite us to linger in Christmas joy while also asking how fear can become fuel for justice as we look toward the year ahead. Blue Christmas is a reflective, authentic service designed for people who are hurting, grieving, lonely or stressed--those who struggle to feel joy amid the bright lights and celebrations of this season. Through Scripture, silence, prayer, and candlelighting, space will be created to name and acknowledge our grief, loss, and sadness while also affirming the presence and promises ushered in by Jesus, the Light of the World. Please join us for a simple supper of soup and bread starting at 6:30pm following by worship at 7:00pm where we will hear again how God is with us, even in our darkest nights. In worship on Sunday, December 14 the MVP Children's Choir will offer special music for the holiday season. Children between the ages of 4 and 10 are invited to join the Children's Choir to rehearse their special music on Sunday Mornings from 10:30-10:45am beginning on Sunday, November 9 and continuing through Sunday, December 14. If the children in your household would like to participate in the Children’s Choir, please bring them to the Children's Ministry area in the Chapel by 10:30am each Sunday morning. You’re invited to journey more deeply into our Advent worship series, What Do You Fear?, through a beautifully crafted Advent Devotional Guide filled with thoughtful readings, poetry, and artwork. Spend time with the guide during the week, then join other MVPers for a relaxed and meaningful small-group conversation on Sunday mornings—December 7, 14, and 21—from 10:00 to 10:45am in the Don Graham Community Room (second floor, near the nursery). This event is all about getting into the holiday spirit, enjoying Christmas music and seasonal treats, and building connections within our wonderful neighborhood.
