MVP Shower Ministry volunteers and other interested members of the congregation are invited to save the date for a free First Aid and CPR Demonstration Class at Mount Vernon Place UMC on Saturday, June 13, from 10:00am to 12:00pm. In response to requests from Shower Ministry volunteers for additional training, this class will offer demonstrations on basic first aid, Stop the Bleed, and hands-only CPR, taught by DC Fire and EMS. Please note that this course does not provide official CPR or first aid certification, but is meant to equip MVPers for emergency situations. Jazz on the Steps, one of MVP's major opportunities to meet and fellowship with our neighbors is happening again on June 12! Jeff Antoniuk and his fellow jazz musicians will be performing, and grilled hot dogs and chips will be served near the steps facing 9th Street. Young Adults (20s & 30s) are invited to join the MVP Young Adult community this Sunday, June 7, to kick off the summer with an Ice Cream Social and Game Night from 5:00–6:15pm. Rather than the Young Adult Small Group's regular gathering, young adults will meet at a group member's home near the church for an evening of fellowship, games, and sweet treats. All young adults are invited to come connect, relax, and enjoy a fun start to the summer season. Whether attending for the first time or returning to reconnect with friends, everyone is welcome. Starting on Monday, June 1, you are invited to join the Monday Night Bible Study for an online study exploring selections on gender and sexuality from Braving the Truth: Essential Essays for Reckoning With and Reimagining Faith by the late Rachel Held Evans. This study will run through Monday, June 29, and will engage honest, compassionate, and thought-provoking reflections on faith, Scripture, identity, and belonging. Together, we will consider how the church might reckon faithfully with difficult questions, listen more deeply to the experiences of others, and reimagine a faith rooted in grace, courage, and love. Through these essays, this study will seek to create space for meaningful conversation, spiritual reflection, and a deeper commitment to embodying the expansive welcome of God. Are you seeking a space to explore the intersection of faith, identity, and God’s inclusive love? You are invited to join MVP’s upcoming 4-week Pride Study. This study group will offer an opportunity to engage scripture, theology, and the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ Christians in meaningful and faithful conversation. In the group participants will reflect on questions of belonging, justice, and what it means to live authentically as part of the body of Christ in a setting centered on learning, dialogue, and spiritual growth. This study is open to LGBTQ+ persons, allies, and anyone seeking deeper understanding. MVPers of all ages are invited to a mini outdoor retreat inspired by our Summer Worship Series, “Godly Artists: The Role of Creativity in All of Us,” as we explore creativity through nature, movement, and shared community. We will begin with a "hike" through Rock Creek Park, followed by a picnic lunch and time for creative reflection at the mid-point of the journey, before returning to the meet up location by 2:00pm. The group will gather 10:00am near the Woodley Park Metro.

You are invited to join MVPers and others on Thursday, May 28 at 6:45pm in the Fellowship Hall for an evening of movement, breath, and connection at this yoga gathering, led by MVPer and yoga instructor, Kaitlyn. Through gentle, accessible flow, you’ll have space to stretch, strengthen, and reconnect with both body and spirit, with prayer woven throughout the practice to deepen the experience. Come join justice minded MVPers and others as we engage the issues shaping DC at the Washington Interfaith Network Candidate Forum on Sunday, May 17 from 3:00–5:00 PM at Union Temple Baptist Church (1225 W St SE). DC’s mayoral, at-large Council, and congressional delegate candidates will respond to a community-driven agenda shaped by residents from all eight wards, addressing priorities like public safety, housing, utility costs, and homelessness. With WIN, we believe that when communities show up together, we can make a difference in our city; come be part of an afternoon of civic engagement, accountability, and collective action. MVP has committed to bringing at least 5 people from our community to support this important event. Mark your calendar for our Summer Intergenerational Vacation Bible School Weekend! Compassion Camp VBS will take place the weekend of June 26–28, offering a creative and faith-filled experience centered on themes of compassion, justice, and loving-kindness, with opportunities for all ages to explore what it means to care for others, yourself, and the world God loves. You are invited to help shape this collaborative weekend between Dumbarton UMC and MVP by joining a planning meeting on May 7 from 7:00–8:00pm via Zoom, where your ideas, energy, and imagination can play a meaningful role in bringing this intergenerational experience to life. MVP's Young Adult (20s & 30s) community is gathering for a Young Adult Celebration on Sunday, May 3 at 5:00pm, and you are warmly invited to be part of it! During this gathering, there will be a celebration cake and space to honor all the big and small moments of life. You are encouraged to bring whatever you are celebrating—whether it’s a new job, starting a new school, a recent move, finishing a tough week, simply doing the dishes, enjoying good weather, or literally anything that has brought you joy or a sense of accomplishment. This is a chance to show up as you are, share your story, and celebrate alongside others in a welcoming and supportive community. The Children's Easter Egg Hunt will begin at 12:45pm and Children are invited to bring a basket or bag in which to place their gathered eggs. Volunteers are needed to hide our Easter Eggs at 12:30pm and to supervise the experience.

The potluck will commence following worship. MVP will provide fried chicken, drinks, and fun for all ages! You are invited to bring a side dish and/or desserts to share.

Easter our biggest celebration of the year, and we are eager to welcome you and your friends as we proclaim how Christ is risen, paving the way for a new life in which despair, fear, temptation, injustice, shame, and even death have lost their power.

Good Friday takes us to the cross where we believe Jesus was crucified.

Our community will then gather at 6:45pm in our sanctuary where we will reflect on the Stations of the Cross and what they have to teach us today.

Validated parking is available in the garage starting at 6:30pm.

On Maundy Thursday we remember Jesus and his disciples in the upper room where they shared the Last Supper and Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. Our worship this Thursday evening will include the sacrament of communion and the option to have your feet or hands washed as an act of remembrance and blessing.

Holy Week begins this Sunday as we remember Jesus arriving in the city of Jerusalem, the place where he has told his disciples he will be mocked, flogged, and crucified. While "the crowds" cheered him on, "the entire city" was in turmoil as people inquired about the person who came riding in on the back of a donkey and a colt. The entrance is what Stanley Hauerwas calls "an unmistakable political act." The entrance symbolizes the clash of two very different kinds of power. One is marked by humility, non-violence, and compassion for all. The other is marked by dominance, weapons, and wealth for a select few. What side would you have chosen if you were in Jerusalem that day? What side have you chosen today? While it might be easy to shout "Hosanna" at the start of the week, are we willing to pay the price that comes with following Jesus all the way to the cross?

Worship will include the distribution of palms and our children participating in a Palm Parade during the opening hymn.

Do you love to read? Enjoy talking about a good book with others? Like to support a local small business? If so, you are invited to participate in the next gathering of Beyond the Book on Thursday, March 26 from 6:30 to 7:30pm at Teaism in Penn Quarter (400 8th Street NW). The March conversation will be focused on The End of the Affair by Graham Greene, a novel following the divergent post-war lives of Sarah and Maurice after their adulterous relationship during WWII. Maurice discovers a wedge being driven between them as Sarah’s growing devotion to God bristles against his unwavering love for her.  Read the book in advance and come purchase a cup of hot tea before settling in for thoughtful conversation and good company. MVP's Shower Ministry is open on Sunday Mornings from 8:00-10:00am. Volunteers arrive at 7:30am to set-up the area, greet and welcome guests, engage in conversation, help distribute supplies, and ensure a welcoming and clean space for all who participate. Those who are serving then stay through 10:55am to clean and tidy the space. Please contact the Shower Ministry Co-Coordinators to sign up to serve or to receive more information on this vital ministry.

You are invited to join the UMC congregations in our hub as we journey through the Vital Conversations on Immigration series, a tool designed to help explore our calling to embody justice, mercy, and hospitality. The series will take place via Zoom on Thursday evenings starting February 26 and concluding on March 26.

With a study guide and accompanying video, each session will invite you into deeper reflection on the realities of immigration today, guided by the voices of faith leaders, theologians, advocates, and immigrants themselves.

Starting on Monday, February 23, you are invited to join the Monday Night Book Study for an online, 6-week study exploring Fear of the Other: No Fear in Love by Bishop Will Willimon. Rooted in the promise of 1 John that “perfect love casts out fear,” this study examines how fear distorts our common life and how the gospel calls us to respond with courageous, Christ-shaped love. Drawing on Scripture and Wesleyan theology, participants will wrestle with Jesus’ command to love our enemies, pray for those who oppose us, and see our adversaries as persons created and loved by God. In a polarized world, this study invites us to confront fear not with withdrawal or hostility, but with the risky, transforming love of Christ.
