Exodus 1:18-2:10

"The exodus is a powerful symbol that the present situation does not define what is possible for God."

—Terence E. Fretheim

In this season, we will be journeying throughout the book of Exodus on Sunday mornings, exploring the concept of divine promise that leads the Israelites from oppression to freedom, absence to presence, disorder to order, darkness to light, the wilderness to the Promised Land. Each theme has the power to call our souls into a deeper union with God, a union that is much needed in this liminal season. We begin this week with an astounding story—a baby is born and spared from death when he is placed in a basket and floated down the Nile. The baby Moses was born into the Hebrew culture, raised as an Egyptian, and eventually leads the Israelites to the Promised Land. The civil disobedience of two midwives sets the scene for the redemption of Israel. How might God be calling us in similar ways right now?
