Ready || The Second Sunday of Advent || Ready?
Edward Hicks (1780-1849) painted at least sixty-two images of the scene found in Sunday’s Old Testament lesson. Most of the paintings are known as the “Peaceable Kingdom.” And while several of them feature different details or depictions of historic events, all of them offer a glimpse of creation living in peace with a child leading it all. Why would Hicks have created so many images of the same story? Was he trying to create the perfect painting? Or did he long for this image of profound, embodied peace to hang in the home of dozens of friends and family members, a visual reminder of Christ’s intentions for the world? Is such peace possible? What might be required from us for such peace to reign in our hearts, our lives, our cities, and our nations? Are we ready to not only experience this peace, but make peace a reality for all people?
Join us this morning as we light the candle of Peace, celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion, and continue our journey through Advent together.
