Ready || The Third Sunday of Advent || Ready...for Liberation
“The desert is a dangerous place. It is always moving, so it is hard to know where you are. There is little water, so you get thirsty and you can die if no water is found. Almost nothing grows there, so there is almost nothing to eat. In the daytime it is hot and the sun scorches your skin. In the night it is cold. When the wind blows, the sand stings when it hits you...The desert is a dangerous place. People do not go into the desert unless they have to.”
These words are part of several Godly Play scripts for children. Whenever a story takes place in the wilderness, a box of sand is placed before the eyes of young people as they are beckoned to imagine being in a place one would prefer to avoid.
But we cannot always avoid the desert. Dry, parched places are part of life.
How, then, might we learn to not only live in the desert, but discover joy in the desert? Can we dare to believe that dry land can become arid, and our languishing can be transformed into new life, even in the desert?
Join us this morning as we seek to gain tools for life in the desert and embrace Isaiah’s vision of liberation for all of creation.
