Luke 6:17-26

"Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh." The words are part of one of the greatest sermons ever preached. While it's offered from a mountain in Matthew's gospel, Luke has Jesus coming down from the mountain and standing on the plain where he can be near a large, diverse crowd as he describes the new way of life one can experience through God's reversal of fortunes. Weeping is being transformed into laughter. Joy can be seized as an act of resistance by all who are being hated or excluded. God's great reversal is filled with surprises.

The late Archbishop Desmond Tutu seized joy as an act of resistance. He laughed in the face of injustice. He taught how joy is predicated on compassion and generosity toward others, something he describes in this short video. How might we do the same today?

Join us on Sunday as our series, "Taking God Seriously," continues with "Claim Joy!"
