Mark 10:1-16

The word "woke" was first used as a call for black liberation by Jamaican activist Marcus Garvey more than 100 years ago. It continued to be used within some communities to refer to an awareness of injustice. It is now often used as a buzzword to describe anything that is too liberal or progressive. There are "woke" companies, people, and cultures.

What if we were to borrow part of the original meaning of the word and become "awakened" to the ways of Jesus in an effort to gain a deeper understanding of Mark's Jesus—what he stood for, the actions he took, the words he spoke, and their potential meaning for us today?

Our passage this week is full of landmines that make it tempting to skip over it rather than dig deep for meaning. But when we do, we discover again how Jesus is always working to protect and embrace the vulnerable while also seeking God's very best for all of God's children. How might we do the same?
