Barely Hanging On...to Faith and the Church || A Place To Be Loved and Forgiven

Sunday, August 29, 2021

Rev. Dr. Donna Claycomb Sokol || Pastor

Psalm 130 & John 13:31-35

“There are recovery programs for people grieving the loss of a parent, sibling, or spouse. You can buy books on how to cope with the death of a beloved pet or work through the anguish of a miscarriage. We speak openly with one another about the bereavement that can accompany a layoff, a move, a diagnosis, or a dream deferred. But no one really teaches you how to grieve the loss of your faith. You’re on your own for that.”

-Rachel Held Evans, Searching for Sunday

Seasons that have us Searching for Sunday like the one we continue to journey through have the capacity to shake our faith, impacting our relationship with God and the church. But sometimes, just showing up is all it takes to witness a miracle and be reminded we are not alone. Using Rachel Held Evans’ book Searching For Sunday as our guide, you are invited to join us this fall as we seek to (re)discover how and why we need to keep hanging on. Our series begins this week with pondering together the gift of being part of a community that loves and forgives us no matter what. We will also celebrate the sacrament of baptism for a beloved toddler and his family.
